Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and Chris Coons, D-Del., are pushing President Donald Trump to allow FBI special counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election "without impediment," Politico reports.
"We urge President Trump to allow the special counsel to complete his work without impediment, which is in the best interest of the American people, the president, and our nation," Tillis and Coons wrote in their joint statement. "We have heard from constituents — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike — who agree that special counsel Robert Mueller should be able to conduct his investigation without interference. This should not be a partisan issue."
Trump has called the probe a witch-hunt and hoax, and his attorney John Dowd last Saturday released a statement calling for an end to it, saying: "I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe's boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt dossier."
Tillis and Coons last year introduced a bill that mandates that only the Senate-confirmed attorney general, or next highest ranked Department of Justice official, can fire the special counsel, and the special counsel can challenge the decision before a three-judge panel, but the legislation has stalled in the Senate.
