President Donald Trump has declared The Wall Street Journal to be "fake news" after an editorial in the news outlet called his coronavirus press conferences "boring" and unproductive.
A Journal op-ed blared, "Trump's Wasted Briefings" which argues the regular coronavirus updates are stand-ins for the campaign rallies that were halted by the coronavirus pandemic.
"Mr. Trump seems to have concluded that the briefings could be a showcase for him," Perhaps they substitute in his mind for the campaign rallies he can no longer hold because of the risks," the op-ed read. "Perhaps he resented the media adulation that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been receiving for his daily show. Whatever the reason, the briefings are now all about the president."
Trump defended his briefings by saying they draw high ratings compared to other television press conferences.
Trump tweeted Thursday:
"The Wall Street Journal always 'forgets' to mention that the ratings for the White House Press Briefings are 'through the roof' (Monday Night Football, Bachelor Finale, according to @nytimes) & is only way for me to escape the Fake News & get my views across."
News Corp. owns The Wall Street Journal and Fox News, which generally has a positive relationship with President Trump.
