Former Vice President Joe Biden has spent more than $1 million on advertisements on Facebook, the vast majority of which were seen by voters over the age of 45, The Daily Beast reports.

Democratic communications company Bully Pulpit Interactive tracks spending on Facebook ads by the current candidates for the Democratic nomination for president. This data shows that an estimated 49.4 percent of Biden’s Facebook spending has been seen by users age 45 to 64, and another 32.7 percent reached those age 65 and older, while only 17.4 percent was seen by users age 25 to 44.

“Age is a targeting setting the campaign has to choose when setting up ads,” BPI partner Mike Schneider told the Daily Beast. “Of course, who is reached is somewhat based on Facebook’s user base — but safe to say major differences between campaigns are based on intentional decisions.”

By comparison, just 12.7 percent of ads for the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., reached users age 65 and older, 25.7 percent reached users age 45 to 64, and 50.1 percent reached users age 25 to 44.

Pew Research Center states that about 79 percent of Americans from the age of 18 and 29 use Facebook, compared to 46 percent of those age 65 and older.
The Biden campaign did not respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment.
