Evan McMullin Calls for 'Unity' in New Web Ad

Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin has released the first in a series of web videos promoting his vision of what type of leadership the nation needs.

In the 38-second ad titled "Unity," McMullin emphasizes that "we should never let leaders divide us along racial lines, along religious lines or in any other way. We must remember that despite our differences, we can be united as Americans."

McMullin, who was chief policy director for the House Republican Conference after serving for many years as a CIA operations officer, announced his candidacy for the presidency earlier this month, presenting himself as an alternative to Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

He told MSNBC that the reason for his candidacy was that "Americans ought to be able to vote for somebody they are excited about, somebody they support, not somebody who they are supporting just to oppose the other person."

Although McMullin has met the requirements to be on the ballot in his home state of Utah, Colorado and a few other states, he has missed the deadlines in many other places.

McMullin campaign adviser Brian Henderson told the Deseret News Utah that they are aggressively trying to get on the ballot in other states, including filing lawsuits "where appropriate."

ABC News reported that the campaign's strategy is to block any candidate from reaching the required 270 electoral votes to win the presidency, thus sending the election to the House of Representatives, where revulsion at both Clinton and Trump would result in the House choosing McMullin as a unifying candidate.
