Why do so many liberals regard Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren as their “dream” 2016 presidential candidate? Because of her skill in playing to popular anxieties about a faltering national economy and the concept that Congress is colluding with Wall Street against the interests of the American public,
according to The Washington Post.
On Wednesday, Warren took to the Senate floor to protest a provision loosening restrictions on derivative trading that was included in a $1 trillion spending bill which Congress is expected to approve in the coming days.
"I come to the floor today to ask a fundamental question — who does Congress work for? Does it work for the millionaires, the billionaires, the giant companies with their armies of lobbyists and lawyers? Or does it work for all of us?" she queried.
Warren’s populist focus on income inequality “sits at the core of the Democratic base's belief system at the moment,” according to The Post.
Many liberal Democrat “base” voters also believe that “a sort of built-in institutional unfairness” is to blame for much of what is wrong with the United States today. When combined with the fact that the Democrat Party’s 2016 presidential frontrunner is not a Wall Street-bashing populist, “speeches like the one Warren gave Wednesday will just fuel chatter about why she should challenge Hillary Rodham Clinton in two years, the Post added.
Democrats are not the only ones who believe the system is stacked against them. The Wall Street Journal’s Neil King recently pointed to the results of a recent WSJ/NBC News poll which shows that 58 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of Republicans subscribe to this view.
However, “among the disenchanted lurk wide disagreements over what the problems are. A majority of Republicans who feel things are stacked against them say the government is doing too much, while an even larger majority of Democrats of similar mind think the government should do more.”
King added that “anyone running for the White House in 2016 will
want to appeal to this huge block of the politically and economically alienated.”
