President Barack Obama should speak up when he sees something he perceives as wrong in society after he leaves office, Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings said Tuesday.

During an appearance on CNN, Cummings urged Obama not to stay in the shadows as an ex-president.

"This is no time for political correctness," Cummings said, reports the Washington Examiner. "We're talking about the future of America so when he goes out, I don't want him to sit back and lay back and say, 'I'm gonna vacation.'

"If you see things going wrong that will affect children yet unborn, I want him to do that."

Obama will deliver his farewell address Tuesday night in Chicago, a speech that is expected to urge the next generation of government leaders to "fight for democracy," his senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said.

"The major focus on the speech isn't going to be reflecting back on how far we've come over the last eight years, but really looking forward and how we take the accomplishments, many [of which] through the hard work and grit of the American people came to fruition, and build on that going forward," Jarrett said, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Obama is slated to speak at 8 p.m.
