Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., is calling for additional sanctions against Iran after Qassem Soleimani, a shadowy general, traveled to Russia — in violation of numerous United Nations resolutions forbidding him from leaving his country, Fox News reports.
Soleimani arrived in Moscow on Wednesday to meet with high-ranking Russian officials.
During a confirmation hearing before Congress in 2015, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford said many Americans were killed by Iranian-backed forces under the command of Soleimani.
And in an interview with Fox News, Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, slammed the U.S. agreement with Iran and said action needs to be taken as a result of Soleimani's Moscow trip.
"He was just caught in Moscow violating the existing sanctions that we have on his travel, Royce said, "So when the president of the United States says that this was a badly negotiated deal, we now see that not only are they developing these ballistic missiles, but they are in consultation with the head of their terror network in Moscow — obviously for additional weapons of war. And we have to move now."
Royce said this is the third time Soleimani has been caught in Russia.
"The previous administration didn't want to admit he had been in Moscow," he said. "But we had the photographs of it."
He said the trip is in clear violation of previous sanctions on Iran.
"The question is, do we move now and do we hit Iran with all the sanctions that we have at our disposal?" Royce said. "And do we begin to organize the international community behind us?"
He said the U.S. has already lost ground by not taking action previously.
"We've had billions transferred in wealth to Iran," he said. "Some of it on cash and gold on pallets, you know. It has been unbelievable.
"So, they don't take us seriously and that's why they're developing these new ICBMs. Now is the time for the administration to move on establishing and pushing the new sanctions, not allowing — not allowing companies to do business with Iran. So we're having hearings this morning on exactly that subject."
