Ed Gillespie: GOP Can Paint Deep Blue New York Red

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 10:01 AM EDT

Perhaps the only thing between Republicans and a U.S. Senate seat and the governor’s mansion in New York is the devil and the deep blue state, given the GOP-leaning mood of the country.

Although both Senate seats in the Empire State are up for grabs, the only competitive one seems to be Kirsten Gillibrand’s, and two other Democrats are challenging her in the Sept. 14 primary. On the GOP primary ticket hoping to win that seat are Joe DioGuardi, a former congressman and the father of former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi; Bruce Blakeman; and David Malpass.

Ed Gillespie, former head of the Republican National Committee, isn’t sure who will win the GOP primary, but he says this is the year that whoever emerges from that fracas could win the seat, as Democrats seem threatened in all arenas.

Story continues below video:

The GOP primary for governor pits Rick Lazio against Carl Palladino competing for the honors of challenging Democrat Andrew Cuomo.

Acknowledging again New York’s deep blue voting, Gillespie nonetheless says other blue states have gone Republican this year, and New York may follow.
