Heightened Security for Trump in N.Y.

By    |   Wednesday, 18 September 2024 09:21 AM EDT

Heightened security measures were evident Tuesday night when former President Donald Trump arrived at Trump Tower in New York City.

Shortly before 11 p.m. ET, Trump was led inside under the protection of a white tent and Secret Service snipers amid a boost in security, the New York Post reported.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) provided additional protection for Trump.

The Republican presidential nominee arrived in Manhattan two days after surviving a second assassination attempt on his life in little more than two months.

Trump was shot in the ear during a July 13 assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and then was the victim of another would-be assassination at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

Upon arriving at Trump Tower, the former president was unloaded from his motorcade under the cover of a white tent. A Secret Service counter-sniper team was stationed on scaffolding above.

Law enforcement sources told the Post that Trump and his family are being treated to extra security details — larger than that of any other former president receives — while visiting the city.

The outlet added that former first lady Melania Trump earlier Tuesday was seen leaving Trump Tower with a motorcade of eight vehicles — double the number she typically has.

Donald Trump arrived in the city for a Wednesday night campaign rally at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in on Long Island.

NBC New York reported that County Executive Bruce Blakeman said Nassau County police will be among the law enforcement agencies securing the rally, with federal agencies including the Secret Service in control of security.

Local officials said all their resources, including specialized units, will assist the Secret Service in securing the GOP nominee and his supporters. Nassau Police will have emergency services, the mounted unit, and aviation assisting the FBI.

"This will be the safest place in the country on that day, Wednesday," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said, NBC New York reported.

Ryder added that the venue and parking lot were to be locked down Tuesday night in order for law enforcement to conduct a sweep and secure the area.

ABC7 New York reported Wednesday morning that people already were lining up well ahead of the 8 a.m. ET parking lot opening time.
