Donald Trump on Tuesday night said no one at his Tuesday rally, when he said "Second Amendment people" could stop bad Supreme Court appointments by Hillary Clinton, thought he was indicating they should assassinate his rival for the Oval Office.

"Nobody in that room thought anything other than" he meant to defeat Clinton at the ballot box, Trump said in an interview set to air Tuesday night on Fox News Channel's "Hannity."

"This is a political movement. This is a strong, powerful movement, the Second Amendment, you know," Trump told host Sean Hannity. "Hillary wants to take your guns away. She wants to leave you unprotected in your home. This is a tremendous, political movement. The NRA, as you know, endorsed me. … I just saw, they tweeted out, basically they agree 100 percent with what I said.

"There can be no other interpretation. Even reporters have told me. I mean, give me a break."

Trump earlier Tuesday stirred up a hornet's nest when he was warning a crowd of supporters in Wilmington, North Carolina, about potential Clinton Supreme Court nominees getting rid of the Second Amendment right to gun ownership.

"Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment," Trump said. "By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks. Though the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know."

Clinton's campaign, other Democrats, and some Republicans said Trump was joking about Clinton being assassinated, though Trump's campaign said he simply was talking about Second Amendment advocates rallying to defeat her.

Despite Trump's assertion that "nobody in the room" thought he meant he was talking about Clinton being shot, one supporter was captured on camera behind him looking shocked at the comment:
