President Donald Trump is moving his agenda ahead with his Cabinet and Supreme Court picks and deregulation efforts, but "makes everything harder" when he veers off message, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says.
In an interview posted Wednesday by "The Weekly Standard," the Kentucky Republican said Trump's approval rating would be "10 to 15 points higher if he allowed himself to stay on message."
McConnell told the conservative outlet that said he likes "what the president is doing," but that "what he's saying makes everything harder."
According to McConnell the president's tweets and brash public comments not only make it "harder to achieve what you want to achieve," but create a "theater aspect" and distractions "on a daily basis."
It's not that Trump's reliance on Twitter is bad, he said, but noted, "what you say with the tweet" matters.
The president is the "most criticized person in the world," McConnell said, but when Trump responds, it often becomes a "multi-day story" that overshadows more serious issues.
McConnell said Trump "doesn't always take" the advice the Senate leader gives him, but insists nonetheless, he and the president have "a really good relationship."
