Trump: 'Don't Know What to Expect' From Harris in Debate

By    |   Tuesday, 10 September 2024 12:09 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday morning that his biggest challenge in debating Vice President Kamala Harris will be "you don't know what to expect" because of her shifting policies.

"She's changed all of her policies over the years," Trump told NBC News' Garrett Haake in a telephone interview, adding that he thinks that will make it "much easier" to define her with voters, as "she's no longer believable."

Haake further reported that the GOP nominee said he feels "great" heading into the debate, moderated by ABC News and being held in Philadelphia.

This will be Trump's second presidential debate this season, but his first against Harris.

In the first debate, President Joe Biden's performance raised questions about Biden's age and capabilities. Harris replaced him as the candidate at the top of the ticket after he dropped out and she shortly thereafter became the party's nominee.

Sources close to the former president said he's been participating in intensive debate preparations over the past two days. Harris has been in Pittsburgh over the weekend in extensive sessions for her first debate with Trump.

NBC News reported Tuesday, based on interviews with three sources who speak to Trump regularly, including one involved in his debate preparations, that he's become much more focused on the debate in recent days.

Two of the sources said that the former president's strategy will not involve painting Harris as a person who flip-flops on the issues, but will focus on her more liberal positions from the past and make her own them.

Trump, likewise, has shifted positions on several issues over the years, including on abortion.

A source familiar with Harris' debate strategy said the vice president will focus on reminding people "what it was like during Donald Trump's years" in office.
