President Donald Trump has been telling allies that he is concerned about the possibility that he could be impeached as deals in federal investigations into money spent to silence women are revealed, multiple sources have told NBC News.
On Wednesday, his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was sentenced to three years in prison after he admitted to violating campaign finance laws by arranging payments to women during the 2016 election, at Trump's direction.
Further on Wednesday, federal prosecutors announced they reached a deal with American Media Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, which admitted to entering an agreement with the president's campaign staff to buy and kill stories about the then-candidate's relationships with women.
David Pecker, a longtime ally of Trump's, is CEO and chairman of AMI.
“The entire question about whether the president committed an impeachable offense now hinges on the testimony of two men: David Pecker and Allen Weisselberg, both cooperating witnesses in the SDNY investigation," a person close to Trump told NBC News.
Weisselberg, the chief financial officer for the Trump organization, has been granted immunity for his testimony, leaving Trump as the only person still arguing that the payments were not made to influence the election.
Trump, though, told Reuters earlier this week that he is not concerned about impeachment, as "it's hard to impeach somebody who hasn't done anything wrong and who's created the greatest economy in the history of our country."
