About four out of 10 Republican insiders would like to cut short Donald Trump's run for the presidency, according to an anonymous survey hosted by Politico

The survey asked the Republican insiders this question: "Would you like to see an organized effort to change the rules of the Republican convention to stop Donald Trump from winning the GOP nomination?"
  • 37 percent said yes, they would like to see the rules changed.
  • 63 percent said they would not.
Trump has 1,447 bound delegates and commitments from 95 unbound delegates, which puts him over the 1,237 needed to earn the Republican presidential nomination.

Some of the insiders say that Trump threatens the future of the Republican Party, based in part on his recent comments about the Mexican heritage of the federal judge in the Trump University case.

"Trump's continued descent into madness is dragging the GOP down with him," said a Florida Republican. "A convention switch-up would be great politics and save the GOP."

One Iowa Republican told Politico that the convention needs to change its rules or the party will face "historic defeat."

The Iowa Republican blasted Trump, calling him "a bully through and through, one that takes the low road at every opportunity, someone who doesn't understand or care about policy. And lest we forget, a racist."

Republicans have a four-seat majority in the House of Representatives, and some are concerned that majority is in jeopardy because of Trump's effect on other Republicans.

One Colorado Republican is a delegate to the GOP convention, and said, "I will work to push through any rule necessary to deny Trump the nomination."

The delegate added, "If he is our nominee, I believe the party will lose races all the way down the ticket."

A New Hampshire Republican said the party doesn't need to stay aligned with Trump.

"We shouldn't enter a suicide pact with him," the Republican said.

Some of the insiders believe that removing Trump would hurt the party more than keeping him onboard.

"Republicans can't do anything to hurt Trump now without knee-capping our other GOP candidates up and down the ballot," a Virginia Republican said in the survey.

A New Hampshire Republican agreed. "We are screwed either way, but more screwed if we ignore the millions of people who voted for him."

CNN reports that some Republicans are planning a delegate revolt for the Republican convention. Convention veteran Jim Bopp told CNN that a rules change was not likely.

"I would put money on no rules changes that would affect the outcome of the nominating process," Bopp told CNN.
