The newest addition to Donald Trump's presidential campaign staff donated thousands of dollars to Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama in past elections.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Steven Mnuchin — who was named Trump's national finance chairman Thursday — has supported Democrats Clinton and Obama in the past.

Trump became the presumptive Republican presidential nominee this week after his two opponents, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, suspended their campaigns.

The Journal cites public records that show Mnuchin has given $7,400 to Clinton's campaigns since 2000, which includes the maximum amount of $2,300 to her 2008 White House bid. He donated $2,300 to Obama's 2008 campaign after he became the party's nominee.

Mnuchin has also donated money to former Democrat presidential candidates John Edwards, John Kerry, and Al Gore. He did, however, give Republican Mitt Romney $2,300 during his 2008 presidential campaign and $2,500 four years later.

In 2012, reports the Journal, Mnuchin gave $22,500 to a fundraising committee that was set up by Romney's presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Mnuchin is currently the chairman and CEO of Dune Capital Management LLC. He previously worked at Goldman Sachs, which Trump has criticized on the campaign trail because Cruz's wife works there.

Mnuchin joins the Trump campaign as the real estate mogul begins to turn his focus to the general election. After self-funding his primary effort, Trump told NBC News Wednesday night he wants to raise more than $1 billion, with the help of the national party, for the general election.
