As special counsel Robert Mueller continues his investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. elections, one member of President Donald Trump's administration finds himself in a particularly awkward position, CNN reported on Monday.
Don McGahn, the top lawyer at the White House, is expected to be interviewed in the coming weeks in Mueller's probe.
The special counsel's team also is likely to soon talk with Communications Director Hope Hicks and Josh Raffel, who take care of press-related inquiries for White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, the Chicago Tribune reported.
But McGahn is in a special category as he acted as a conduit of information to Trump before the president decided to fire national security adviser Michael Flynn and FBI Director James Comey and also served as the presidential campaign's chief counsel while he was still a partner in private practice.
That makes McGahn, according to CNN, one of the few members of Trump's team who may have knowledge about several aspects of the Mueller probe.
Back in September, McGahn hired lawyer William Burck to represent him after it became knowns that Mueller wanted to speak with him as part of his investigation, according to Law360. Former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus also retained the services of Burck at the same time.
Concerning knowledge of Flynn, McGahn spoke with former acting Attorney General Sally Yates about him less than a week after the inauguration.
Yates, a Barack Obama appointee whom Trump also dismissed, said she warned McGahn about Flynn's international work and said Flynn had lied to the Vice President Mike Pence about discussions he had on Russian sanctions before Trump entered the White House, according to her May congressional testimony, CNN reported.
McGahn also has a central role in the Comey firing, because as White House counsel he was against a termination letter Trump wanted to send to Comey in May, according to The New York Times.
Mueller has a copy of the termination letter with parts of it marked up by McGahn suggesting changes, although it's not clear how much of the letter discussed Trump's frustration with the Russia probe.
