A member of the Democratic National Committee introduced a resolution that urged independent senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine to officially join the Democratic Party.

Sanders and King side with Democrats in voting, CNN reported.

Bob Mulholland, a California member of the committee, introduced the resolution that the party will weigh at its meeting this week. It will go to a resolutions committee where it could be changed, approved, or rejected before going to a full membership vote on Saturday, CNN reported.

Even if the resolution is approved, King and Sanders are not required to abide by it, the CNN report said.

"There's only two real teams in the presidential election in 2020, and that's (President Donald) Trump vs. a Democrat," Mulholland said Tuesday, according to CNN.

"And with Trump running the White House, we need more people to call themselves Democrats and stop standing on the sidelines," Mulholland added.

On Tuesday in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, King said he would remain an independent.

"I've been an independent since the early '90s. I was a governor as an independent. That's who I am. I caucus with the Democrats. You have to choose one caucus or the other. It's worked out," King said in the interview.

"I more often vote with the Democrats, but not always. I like to call them as I see them, and that's where I'm going to stay," King added.

"The DNC urges elected officials, candidates and voters who share common goals and beliefs with Democrats to register or affiliate with the Democratic Party in 2017, 2018, and beyond," Mulholland's resolution said, according to CNN.

Although Sanders ran for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, he has never joined the party. He has been a frequent critic of Trump, including calling Trump's tax plan a "Robin Hood principle in reverse."
