The House Intelligence Committee's chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, accused Obama-era officials who are "burrowed" inside the new administration of President Donald Trump of illegally leaking intelligence to the press.
In an interview with CBS News' "Face The Nation," the California Republican said the leaks that led to national security adviser Michael Flynn's resignation need to be investigated by the "FBI and others."
"The number of people that would actually have known that Mike Flynn, Gen. Flynn, who was the national security adviser designee, was having conversations with the Russians had to be a very, very small number, and it had to be the highest, at the highest levels of the Obama administration," he said.
"I think there is a lot of innuendo out there that the intelligence agencies have a problem with Donald Trump," he added.
"The rank and file people that are out doing jobs across the world, they're difficult places, they don't pay attention to what is going on in Washington. . . . We do have people in the last administration, people who are burrowed in, perhaps all throughout the government, who clearly are leaking to the press.
"And it is against the law, major laws have been broken. If you believe The Washington Post story that said there were nine people who said this, these are nine people who broke the law."
