Third-party spending helped Republicans obliterate the Democrats in last year’s congressional elections, and now the Democrats are playing catch-up for the important Senate races of 2012. Top Democratic strategists are in the final stages of forming a group called the Majority PAC, a “super PAC” that can raise unlimited funds to attack or support candidates,
Politico reports.
The group is a copycat of
Patriot Majority PAC, which ran negative TV ads against tea party candidates including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s Nevada opponent Sharron Angle last year. The move is a sign of Democrats’ desperation. The party has to defend 23 Senate seats next year, not to mention the presidency.
The Majority PAC will have to reveal its donors, but it will be connected to an organization that doesn’t. So anonymous donors can provide at least some of the money, a strategy Democrats harshly criticized last year.
