Democrats believe the Republicans are weakening in their resistance to holding a confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

As Congress comes back to work after the Easter recess, they plan to keep up the pressure on Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and their supporters.

Democratic aides said over 400 editorials were published and hundreds of thousands of messages were sent to the Republicans over Easter recess, reports Politico.

Over a dozen senators, including GOP Sens. Susan Collins and John Boozman, will meet with Garland this week, reports The Hill. Sen. Collins said McConnell "is not real happy with me."

Democrats plan to continue ramping up the pressure on Grassley. "When somebody says I'm not doing my job, I kind of resent it," said Grassley at an Iowa town hall meeting.

A high school senior in Iowa questioned Grassley's position, pointing out that he, himself is at the end of his term, like President Obama.

"Since you, too, are in an election year, how can you possess the authority to make a decision that will affect the future of our country if 'the people have not yet spoken?'" reports the Des Moines Register.

Sen. Harry Reid plans to speak out against the Republican stance every day this week, saying that "instead of following Mitch McConnell off a cliff, Republicans are sprinting in the opposite direction."

Reid said that after hearing from their constituents over the recess, they are realizing that their stance "is not a sustainable position." Sen. Charles Schumer said over the recess, Republicans "got an earful back home."

Democrats back up their findings with poll results. GOP Sen. Pat Toomey's unfavorable rating has climbed 12 points to 35 percent.

Some Republicans are facing challenges to their reelections over the issue. Sen. Jerry Moran from Kansas is facing a sudden primary challenge, and he has now reversed his call for a hearing.

Sen. Mark Kirk from Illinois met with Garland last week, and is facing the longest odds of getting reelected, said Politico.

Sen. Schumer said voters are "terrified by the prospect of Donald Trump picking the next Supreme Court justice," reports The Washington Post.

Republicans are standing firm in their position, said McConnell's spokesman Don Stewart. "After a month-and-a-half of a Democrat campaign, none of our members have changed their mind on this principled decision."

Texas Sen. Jon Cornyn said confirming an "Obama judge" in Garland would be a "travesty."
