House Democrats are carefully plotting to stage a protest when President Donald Trump addresses a joint session of Congress on Feb. 28, The Hill reports.
In a letter circulating on Capitol Hill, a group of liberals is urging colleagues to invite guests who they claim will suffer under new White House policies, according to the website.
The invitees will likely include undocumented immigrants, ethnic minorities, LGBT people and others.
The letter urges Democrats to invite people who have made "a positive impact" on the community "despite discrimination or marginalization," The Hill reported.
"It is our hope that their presence in the House Gallery will remind President Trump that he is not the arbiter of patriotism," the letter reads. "This country belongs to all of us, and his rhetoric of intolerance will not stand.
"Instead of celebrating the very diversity that makes our country a beacon of inclusion and equality, he has chosen to vilify, bully and alienate women, immigrants, people of color, people with disabilities, and people of differing faiths."
The letter's authors include Reps. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, who heads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus; Cedric Richmond of Louisiana, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus; and David Cicilline of Rhode Island and Jared Polis of Colorado, the co-chairman of the LGBT Equality Caucus.
Meanwhile, other Democrats are eyeing an additional form of protest, The Hill said. They are urging colleagues to avoid getting in photos for the traditional handshake when Trump walks down the center aisle of the House chamber on the way to the dais, The Hill noted.
"We have to have a higher standard," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill., said.
"For sure I will not be nearby," Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, echoed.
USA Today reported Trump was invited by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to address the joint session.
In his formal invitation to Trump, Ryan wrote: "With this new unified Republican government, we have a unique opportunity to deliver results for the country."
