Key House Democrats, who had voted in favor of impeaching president Donald Trump, are now taking a more cautious approach to the issue, The Hill is reporting.

Those lawmakers had previously voted for impeachment articles introduced by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas. But they now want House committee investigations of the president to be completed before making a decision.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel of New York, who had backed impeachment votes in 2017 and 2018, is now urging caution, according to The Hill.

In a conference call with Democrats, Engel noted his panel is investigating Russian interference,” a source told the website.

“We need to look at his bizarre relationship between (Russia’s President Vladimir) Putin and Trump,” he reportedly said during the call.

Science Committee Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, who also voted in support of Green’s impeachment resolution, said: “Impeachment is a sacred constitutional responsibility entrusted to Congress. I am committed to continuing to conduct oversight into the president’s conduct and wrongdoing as well as serving as a check on the president.”

The Hill also noted Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts did not rule out impeachment, but for now was deferring to the Judiciary Committee

"He trusts Chairman (Jerry) Nadler’s leadership on this issue.,” McGovern spokesman Matt Bonaccorsi.

Meanwhile, Financial Service Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters of California said Trump should have “been gotten rid of already.”
