Democrats and Republicans have an opportunity to move forward together on the issue of trade, Democratic strategist Kristen Hawn told Hill.TV on Tuesday.
"These issues don't fall down on party lines. So it's more regional. It definitely had political implications during the midterms," said Hawn, a senior adviser at Agenda Global.
"I think it's actually a place where you're going to see Democrats and Republicans working together, and to figure out how to move forward."
Hawn's remarks came as the Trump administration appeared to tone down its trade war with China after the White House said that President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached a deal on a truce at a meeting in Argentina last week.
As part of the deal, Trump reportedly will delay a tariff increase after China agreed to buy U.S. agricultural goods and stated a commitment to work out issues such as trade barriers and forced technology transfers.
Trump also signed a negotiated replacement last week for the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada. The deal now faces a tough battle in Congress next year, as Democrats will control the House.
