Eleven Democratic senators introduced a resolution Tuesday calling for the FBI to do a review of the "domestic terrorist threat" due to the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol, blaming the incident on "violent white supremacists, neo-Nazis, anti-government militia members, and supporters of dangerous, fringe conspiracy theories."
The introduction comes less than a week before the Senate has scheduled to conduct an impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, who Democrats claim incited "insurrection" by speaking to a rally of supporters before the Capitol was stormed.
The resolution in essence branded those who breached the Capitol as "domestic terrorists" which pose an "immediate and growing terrorist threat to the safety of the people of the United States and our democratic form of government."
It referenced the Russian government and linked organizations, which "have sought to amplify the spread of violent extremist ideology in the United States in an effort to destabilize the democratic institutions of the United States and sow discord amongst the people."
Among the specifics called for were the FBI to investigate, "the use of social media and other forms of communication to recruit new members to such groups, organize and plan acts of violence, and encourage others to engage in acts of violence."
The resolution – introduced by Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., on behalf Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., Richard Blumenthal, D- Conn., Cory Booker, D-N.J., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., Pat Leahy, D-Vt., Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore. – makes no mention of the countless riots from the past summer, where at least 25 people, including police officers, were killed.
Former presidential adviser and Newsmax contributor Dick Morris on Monday likened the Democrat efforts regarding the Capitol disturbance to the 1933 German Reichstag fire in which the then-recently elected Nazis used the arson case to suspend virtually all civil liberties in the country.
