The largely pro-choice Democratic Party is becoming divided regarding its message on abortion.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who finished second in the Democratic race for president last year, and Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, offered their endorsement of a pro-life Democrat over the weekend, The Washington Free Beacon reported.
Further, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Sunday there is a place for pro-life Democrats in the party.
Sanders' and Ellison's endorsement of Heath Mello, a Democrat running for mayor of Omaha, Neb., and Pelosi's remark came after DNC chief Tom Perez said last week the Democratic Party is a pro-choice party.
"Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman's right to make her own choices about her body and her health," Perez said. "That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state."
Adding confusion to the issue was Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who said Monday the Democratic Party has room for more than just people who support the practice of abortion.
President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has threatened to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood unless it stops performing abortions.
