A House Democrat who represents a liberal district that includes Seattle believes being a member of her party means supporting abortion and gay marriage.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., addressed the Capitol Hill media Friday morning and made the polarizing remarks.
"I think the party's response [to anti-abortion efforts] will be strong, and hopefully you've seen [that] it's been strong across the board," Jayapal said, according to The Hill.
"Personally, I do think there should be a core set of Democratic ideals that we all agree to. That you can't say you're a Democrat if you're against immigrants, if you're against abortion, if you're against gay marriage, LGBTQ rights."
She added, "I'm not sure what it means to be a Democrat if all of those things are true."
Republican governors in Georgia and Alabama have signed strict anti-abortion bills into law, and other states are considering doing the same. The bills are setting up a likely court challenge, perhaps at the Supreme Court level, to Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.
