The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and affiliated groups on Thursday set up $20 million in advertising to focus on redistricting battles in Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio, Politico reported.
The money will be split among those four states, which are four of the eight states that the DGA set as priorities for discussing the importance of electing Democratic governors before redistricting.
The redistricting process takes place after the next census and near the end of terms for governors that are elected this year, Politico reported.
The ads have not been produced, and the money is still being raised, the report said.
"There's no more dangerous thing to democracy, other than Donald Trump, than this gerrymandering. It is topmost in our minds," said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, the chairman of the DGA.
Activists and donors are responding to the redistricting issue, Inslee told Politico, "we're doing well, it's going to take a lot of work, but we're getting great response."
Democrats are governors in 16 states. There will be 36 gubernatorial elections in 2018 — 26 of which will be in states where the governors are Republicans. Fourteen Republican incumbents are seeking re-election while 12 are open seats, The Washington Post reported.
