DeMint: Dump Republicans Who Won't Vote Against Obamacare

By    |   Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:47 PM EDT

Republicans would do well to vote out any GOP congressman who fails to vote to deny funding for the Affordable Care Act, even if such votes would shut down the government, says former Sen. Jim DeMint.

At a town hall meeting in Fayetteville, Ark. Monday night, the Heritage Foundation president said being blamed for a government shutdown isn't Republicans' greatest danger, The Hill reports.

"The risk of that is so much less than the risk to our country if we implement Obamacare, and so I’m not as interested in the political futures of folks who think they might lose a showdown with the president," said DeMint, who represented South Carolina in the Senate for eight years before quitting on New Years Day.

President Barack Obama believes he holds the strongest cards in the conflict, DeMint said. "I think he knows that Republicans are afraid, and if they are, they need to be replaced,” DeMint told NPR in an interview after the meeting.

Some Republicans oppose holding government spending hostage to an effort to defund Obamacare. They note that a bill including Obamacare defunding wouldn't pass the Senate or get signed by the president.

Meanwhile, the Heritage Foundation's political arm, Heritage Action, unveiled a $550,000 ad campaign Monday designed to bring on board 100 House Republicans who haven't signed a letter in support of the defunding strategy, according to The Hill.
