Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., told Newsmax on Wednesday that yesterday “was a very historic day, but I think for all the wrong reasons," following the vote to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from his post.
Meuser, during an interview on “Wake Up America,” criticized Tuesday's vote to oust McCarthy as a distraction from more important matters and a poor look for Republicans, noting that eight members of the GOP conference voted with Democrats to remove the Republican speaker.
Meuser said, “It was not a day of productivity, it wasn’t even a day of neutrality. It was a day that set us back.”
He later said that the House has to “move on” from this incident and “get a new speaker,” though also noted this would be difficult unless Republicans can “come together as well as we possibly can.”
Meuser added, “Hopefully they don’t continue to be rebels without a cause,” referring to the eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy. "Because I for one don’t know what their cause was.”
He said, “We were in a very good position, our Republican Conference, to advance in the manner that we can” with a Democrat in the White House and a Democrat-controlled Senate.
When asked about possible candidates to be the next speaker, Meuser said that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, are “two great people and probably the leading candidates.”
