Maryland residents are ready for an "outsider" to lift them from heavy taxes so they can keep more of the money they earn, said Republican congressional candidate and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino.

Bongino won the GOP primary for Maryland's District 6 congressional seat Tuesday,  Herald-Mail Media reported. He will face incumbent Democrat Rep. John Delaney in November's election in a heavily blue district.

Voters "are ready for a different option, especially an outsider," Bongino told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday. "People want to fatten up their own wallets once in a while."

Bongino said his message would be "plain and simple" to emphasize less government control in the lives of Americans. He noted that in Maryland there had been 40 tax increases "over the last gubernatorial administration."

"You want to spend more of the money you earn? You want to control your own healthcare, and you want to pick where your kid goes to school? Then, welcome to the new Republican party. That's us," he said.

The real fight was not between Republicans and Democrats, Bongino said, but "D.C. insiders versus the rest of us." He said ordinary Americans lack a voice in Washington.
"Where's that guy with the dirt underneath his fingernails? Where's his voice in D.C. right now? It's been lost."
