Poll: Cuomo Would Top Trump, Astorino in NY Gov Race

By    |   Thursday, 13 February 2014 09:28 AM EST

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo would win re-election by a margin of 2-1 against either of the two possible Republican challengers, including real estate mogul Donald Trump and Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, a new poll has found.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 63 percent of those surveyed support Cuomo compared to 26 percent who say they would vote for Trump.

Fifty-nine percent of New York State voters say Cuomo deserves to be re-elected, compared to 31 percent who say he does not. The governor also enjoys a 59 percent favorability rating. About 60 percent of those polled had a negative view of Trump.

The poll of 1,488 New York voters also found that Cuomo would also roundly defeat Astorino by 58 percent compared to 24 percent. Astorino remains largely unknown with 86 percent of voters saying they haven't heard enough about him to form an opinion, according to the poll.

"Take your pick: Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an opponent nobody knows or an opponent nobody likes. It comes out the same either way: Gov. Cuomo trounces Westchester Country Executive Rob Astorino, the unknown, or Donald Trump, the unliked," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

A poll in January also put Cuomo overwhelmingly in the lead over Trump and Astorino .
