Cruz Spokesman: Contested Republican Convention 'Very Likely'

Fox News

The Republican National Convention is "very likely" to be contested, according to Ted Cruz campaign spokesman Ron Nehring.

"I think it's very, very likely — if not a certainty at this point," Nehring said in a Fox News interview with Megyn Kelly.

Nehring said that Donald Trump will not reach the 1,237 delegate mark he needs to clinch the nomination, according to a report in The Hill.

Trump won in the New York primary, while Cruz placed third behind John Kasich. The front-runner gained his highest majority in New York, and picked up at least 85 delegates, according to Fox News.

Kasich could get at least three, while Cruz is unlikely to pick up any delegates.

Nehring said Trump has "zero chance" of winning the nomination at a contested convention, because "he does something every day to alienate people, and that's why the Republican Party is not going to consolidate behind him."

Trump spoke about Cruz's chances at winning the remaining delegates during his victory speech, The Hill reports.

"We don't have much of a race anymore," Trump said in the speech. "Sen. Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated."

Trump slammed the chances of a contested convention, saying, "it's a crooked system" and "we're going back to the old way where you vote and win."

"It is time for us to get up, shake it off and be who we were destined to be," Cruz said in a speech after the loss, according to Fox News.
