Several top backers of Sen. Ted Cruz's failed presidential bid have kicked off an effort to find an alternative to presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump or oust him at the upcoming Republican convention.

"Call it whatever you want. It's a revolt," Steve Lonegan, Cruz's former New Jersey state director, told the Houston Chronicle.

"It's an uprising. … The fact is, our delegates have a moral obligation to nominate the candidate best suited to defeat Hillary Clinton and also carry the banner of the Republican Party."

Christian talk radio host Steve Deace, who was part of Cruz's Iowa leadership team, told the newspaper:

"I've had delegates from at least a dozen states reach out to me for help … They see that this guy is morally unqualified and he's going to lose, and probably lose bad."

Negative ratings of Donald Trump have soared to their highest level in the presidential campaign, with 70 percent saying they have an unfavorable view of the presumptive Republican candidate, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The negative view of Trump is 10 percentage points higher than it was last month.
