Ad Wars Begin Far Ahead of Election Season

Wednesday, 29 June 2011 04:21 PM EDT

The presidential election is still 16-months away but the ad wars have begun. Priorities USA, a super PAC run by two former aides to President Barack Obama, have launched television ads in Iowa, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, and Colorado attacking Republicans for voting to change Medicare, The Washington Post reported.

The ads are in response to those put on the air in 10 states by Crossroads GPS that attack Obama’s economic policies. The group is spending $5 million on the commercials. Priorities USA was founded after the 2010 elections and is spending $750,000 to air its ads, the Post reported.

The ads by the two groups are an early sign of the role independent organizations will play in 2012. The independent groups do not have the same restrictions on them as political parties and federal candidates and can accept unlimited donations from contributors, the Post reported.
