Crist Drops Pro-life Message From Campaign Website

By    |   Wednesday, 09 June 2010 03:06 PM EDT

With a decision on an important abortion bill pending, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist probably tipped his hand by deleting a pro-life message from his campaign website.

The bill, which the Florida Senate and House passed and sent to the governor on Tuesday, requires doctors to perform an ultrasound on a woman before she can undergo an abortion, although it gives the woman the option of not viewing the sonogram.

The message removed from Crist’s website begins: “Governor Crist believes strongly in the sanctity of life. While Attorney General, Charlie Crist worked with Governor Bush to successfully defend Florida’s Parental Notification law.”

It also notes that, as governor, Crist “named a pro-life conservative as Florida’s first Chief Child Advocate.”

Crist, who is running for the Senate as an independent, is squared off against GOP candidate Marco Rubio.

Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos told LifeNews.com: “Now that he has left the Republican Party in order to win an election and is trying to attract liberal votes, the Crist campaign removed the ‘pro-life/family’ issue page of its website. In doing so, Charlie Crist eliminated any reference to being ‘pro-life’ in a transparent attempt to hide his position in order to win an election.

“When he was a Republican trying to win the Republican primary, Crist repeatedly stated he was pro-life and even said he would fight for pro-life legislation if he’s elected to the Senate.”

Crist has said there is “probably not a whole lot” that would persuade him to sign the bill, telling the Tampa Tribune it “almost seems mean-spirited.”
