President Donald Trump would sign a bill allowing the federal banking system to accept deposits of cash from marijuana sales in states where the drug is legal, Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado said.

Gardner made his remarks in an interview with Cheddar.

Gardner unsuccessfully introduced an amendment to the criminal justice reform legislation to resolve the conflict between federal drug laws, which criminalize marijuana and states like Colorado, which have legalized it.

In those states which have legalized marijuana, growers and stores are prevented from using the federal banking system to deposit money, Cheddar noted.

"You have billions of dollars in cash floating around the country, can't go in banks because banks won't take it,” Gardner said. “It's considered money laundering even though its legal."

Gardner said Trump is agreeable to the change.

"(Trump) would sign this bill if it were to come before his desk," he said.

But The Denver Post noted Gardner’s attempt to push through the amendment was blocked in the Senate, but he has vowed to continue the battle.

“If we can get a vote on it, I feel very confident we can get it passed,” Gardner said.
