White House special counselor Kellyanne Conway on Monday said her comments suggesting that there was wider surveillance of President Donald Trump — through microwaves, for instance — were taken out of context.

In another tense interview with CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, Conway said her comments over the weekend were about surveillance in general, not directly about the surveillance on the president.

"I'm not Inspector Gadget," Conway told Cuomo. "I don't believe people are using the microwave to spy on the Trump campaign. However, I'm not in the job of having evidence; that's what investigations are for."

In an interview with The Record of northern New Jersey, Conway was asked, "Do you know if Trump Tower was wiretapped?"

To which Conway replied:

"What I can say is there are many ways to surveil each other," Conway told The Record. "You can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets — any number of different ways … microwaves that turn into cameras. We know this is a fact of modern life."
