On Wednesday, President Barack Obama hosted a private one-on-one meeting with incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the Oval Office, and the Kentucky Republican emerged with positive things to say about the talks.

"We had a good conversation about a variety of different issues where we might possibly find common ground," McConnell told CNN.

The two talked for roughly an hour, according to the network, but McConnell declined to elaborate about the specific issues they covered.

It was the first time the two met one-on-one for a significant amount of time in four years, The Washington Post reported, and only the third private meeting of the two since Obama took office, CNN said.

The day after the midterm election, the president pledged to work more closely with Republicans, and went so far as to say he'd like to share a drink with McConnell.

"Actually, I would enjoy having some Kentucky bourbon with Mitch McConnell; I don't know what his preferred drink is," the president said at a news conference, according to Politico.

When asked following the meeting whether the two had shared a bourbon, McConnell joked to CNN: "No, this was not the bourbon summit," he said. "But I'm still hoping we'll have it."
