CNN Poll: Republicans Lead in Competitive House Races

By    |   Thursday, 13 October 2022 11:02 AM EDT

Republicans hold a 5-point edge in competitive congressional districts with less than four weeks left until the midterms, a new CNN poll found.

A total of 48% of likely voters said they would support the Republican candidate, while 43% said they would support the Democrat in the "competitive races," according to the CNN poll released Thursday.

Those races are key in determining which major party will control the House. Republicans need to pick up five seats to take control of the lower chamber.

Recent polls have shown the GOP is favored win a majority in the House during the midterms.

Republican voters (52%) hold an advantage compared to Democrat voters (46%) among those who say they are extremely motivated to vote this year, the CNN poll found.

That lead expands among extremely motivated voters in competitive districts, with Republicans leading 55% to 45%.

When asked which party’s policies would move the country in the right direction, voters in competitive districts favored the GOP 54% to 45%.

Among likely voters overall, Democrats lead Republicans 50% to 47%.

The poll was conducted Sept. 3-Oct. 5, well before the Labor Department announced Wednesday that the producer price index (PPI) had increased 8.5% year over year.

Even before that announcement, the CNN poll said the economy and inflation remain key issues for voters.

Survey results showed that 59% of registered voters say the economy is extremely important and 56% saying the same of inflation.

In competitive congressional districts, this increases to 67% and 64%, respectively.

Voters overall are more likely to say that Republican candidates (32%) near them have a clear plan for solving the country’s problems than the Democrats (28%).

Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to see their own party’s candidates as having a clear plan for solving problems, with 71% of GOP voters their candidates have such a plan vs. 59% of Democrats who say the same about their candidates.

Most independents (62%) say neither party’s candidates have a clear plan for solving problems, the CNN poll found.

The survey, conducted among with 1,982 respondents, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
