Poll: Gardner Builds Six-Point Lead Over Udall in Colorado

Colorado Republicans' enthusiasm about November's midterms has driven GOP Rep. Cory Gardner to a six-point lead, 43-37 percent, over Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Udall, a new Fox News poll shows.

The survey of 739 likely voters, polled between Oct. 4-7, found 48 percent of Republicans said they are "extremely" interested in the election, compared to 31 percent of Democrats. The numbers may be more important than in other states, Fox noted, as all Colorado residents vote by mail, and can register to vote up through Election Day.

In addition, 85 percent of Gardner's supporters said they are certain to vote for him, compared to 80 percent of Udall's.

White evangelical Christians, by 38 points; gun owners, by 29 points; men by 17 points; and independents by 15 points all favor Gardner. Meanwhile, Udall leads with Hispanics, by 20 points; lower income voters, 13 points; women, 5 points; and urban voters, 11 percent.

Obamacare may also have an effect. Fifty two percent of those polled said the law "went too far," with 75 percent of the people who opposed the plan supporting Gardner. Udall voted for Obamacare.

In addition, immigration could have an effect, with 50 percent favoring a pathway to citizenship and 39 percent against. People who oppose reform measures favor Gardner by 67-16 percent and people who favor the reform favor Udall by 56-24 percent.

The poll, which has a +/- 3.5 point margin of error, said the state's governor's race is in a dead heat, tied at 42 percent each for Democratic incumbent John Hickenlooper and GOP challenger Bob Beauprez.
