CNN/ORC Poll: Clinton Beating Sanders in Iowa by 19 Points

CNN/ORC Poll: Clinton Beating Sanders in Iowa by 19 Points

By    |   Wednesday, 12 August 2015 05:40 PM EDT

Hillary Clinton is maintaining a commanding lead in Iowa over her closest rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to the latest CNN/ORC poll.

Clinton has the support of 50 percent of Democratic Iowa caucus-goers, with Sanders trailing at 31 percent.

Vice President Joe Biden, who has not announced whether he will seek the Democratic nomination, came in third at 12 percent. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb each polled 1 percent, while former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee had less than 1 percent.

The poll comes as good news for Clinton who is trailing Sanders in New Hampshire in a Boston Herald and Franklin Pierce University poll.

Clinton is strong among women in Iowa, leading Sanders 58 percent to 26 percent. But among men, Sanders is within one point. Clinton has 38 percent to Sanders' 37 percent.

There is also an ideological split with 57 percent of the party's moderates backing the former secretary of state and senator from New York. Only 21 percent of moderates like socialist Sanders.

If Biden doesn't run, Clinton would get the biggest benefit. Considering second-choice candidates of Biden supporters, Clinton would have 58 percent, Sanders 32 percent, and the other three would maintain their current numbers.

Though Sanders trails by almost 20 points, he was at under 10 percent in the spring. His biggest support comes from voters who see the economy as their top issue. Clinton leads on foreign policy and health care.

Sanders does fare better than Clinton on honesty and trustworthiness. Thirty-five percent liked Sanders better in that area compared to 28 percent for Clinton, who has been in the news over her private email server.

The poll was conducted August 7-11 of a sample of 2,014 Iowa adults, 429 who are likely Democratic caucus-goers. The margin error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
