Club For Growth Pushes 'Primary My Congressman' to Challenge GOP 'Liberals'

Thursday, 11 July 2013 12:42 PM EDT

The Club for Growth PAC has endorsed Idaho Falls attorney Bryan Smith as a primary challenger to Rep. Mike Simpson next year after concluding that Simpson is "one of the biggest liberals in the Republican Party today."

According to Politico,
Smith rose as a primary contender after Club for Growth launched its PrimaryMyCongressman.com website, listing Simpson as one of ten Republican congressmen it says too often votes with Democrats who favor liberal policies.

“We met with Bryan months ago after hearing about him through PrimaryMyCongressman.com, and we’re confident that he’ll be a strong conservative alternative to RINO [Republican in name only] incumbent Mike Simpson,” Club for Growth President Chris Chocola told Politico. “The Club for Growth PAC is proud to endorse his candidacy.”

Smith is the first primary candidate the group has endorsed as a result of its effort to field primary challengers against GOP incumbents it feels are not conservative enough. In addition to Simpson, the club has also targeted for replacement Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon, who happens to be the current chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a tea party candidate elected in 2010, and Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois.

National Review reported that Smith raised an impressive $147,000 in the second quarter of this year, with 96 percent of the donations coming from Idaho. Simpson raised $85,850 in the same time period, adding to the $71,827 he already had in the bank
