The conservative Club for Growth PAC bestowed its high-profile endorsement in Georgia's crowded special House election on a candidate who is vowed to be an ally of President Donald Trump, The Hill reported.
Bob Gray, a former councilman, is one of 18 candidates running for the seat left vacant by now-Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel is believed to have a slight edge in the GOP field, according to the report.
According to The Hill, the Atlanta suburban district is viewed as Democrats' first opportunity to test if backlash to Trump will help them flip House seats ahead of 2018.
"Bob Gray is the proven economic conservative in this race," said Club for Growth PAC president David McIntosh, per The Hill. "He's been a consistent fighter for lower taxes and less spending, and he's campaigned on pro-growth policies, and has called for a full and immediate repeal of Obamacare."
The April 18 election features all the candidates competing against each other regardless of party affiliation. If no one reaches a majority, the top two vote-getters will compete in a runoff June 20.
