When President Bill Clinton was in office, he was the scourge of Republicans. But now the GOP sees him in a favorable light compared to current president Barack Obama. Indeed, the conservative interest group Crossroads GPS has begun a new TV ad contrasting the two Democrats over taxes,
Politico reports.
The video starts with a narrator saying, “Two presidents, two visions” and shows pictures of Obama and Clinton side by side.
Then Clinton comes on the screen saying, “Should we raise taxes on anybody right today, rich or poor or middle class? No.”
Next the ad shows a newscaster announcing that Obama will propose a new tax, probably referring to his idea for a tax on the wealthy.
A montage follows, with Obama repeatedly saying “taxes.”
Clinton then returns to the screen. “I personally don’t believe he ought to be raising taxes,” the former president says. “It won’t solve the problems.”
The narrator comes back, saying, “A political, stunt not a solution. A bill full of tax increases,” probably referring to Obama’s jobs plan.
Obama appears on the screen once more saying “pass this bill” three times, again referring to the jobs proposal.
Finally the narrator says, “President Obama, it’s time to attack problems, not people.”
The ad, titled “Two Presidents” will run for two weeks in the key swing states of Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, Politico reports. Crossroads GPS spent $2.6 million on the campaign.
Crossroads GPS president and CEO Steven Law told the news service: “President Obama has launched a tax attack on American jobs that hits Main Street businesses, home mortgages, school and road repair funds, and even charities. Former President Clinton and bipartisan majorities in Congress agree that Obama’s tax hikes won’t solve the problem. The ad aims to get Obama to stop attacking and start listening.”
