Cindy McCain: Husband Would Want Biden Recognized as Winner

Cindy McCain said Friday her late husband, Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, would have wanted Joe Biden to be supported and recognized as president-elect, and that he'd be telling his Republican colleagues that it is "time that we move on" and heal. 

McCain also told CNN's "New Day" that her husband, a 2008 GOP presidential nominee who died in 2018, would want the General Services Administration to acknowledge Biden won the election and to release the funds needed so he can move forward with the transition process. 

"I think Vice President Biden is going to make an incredible president, and not only that, I think that his standards, his values, the things that he works for, working together, working across the aisle, making sure that he does things not for himself but for the good of the country, those are the values that he's always had, and I look forward to watching him and participating in this down the line," McCain said Friday.

McCain is part of Biden's transition team after endorsing his candidacy over President Donald Trump's. The president is contesting the Nov. 3 election and has made accusations of voter fraud in several states after several media outlets projected Biden as the winner. 

Thursday night, CNN, ABC, and NBC projected Biden won Arizona, making him the first Democrat to take the state since President Bill Clinton's win in 1996. McCain said she thinks the declaration is "wonderful."

Arizona has always been "very moderate," McCain said, "but in this case, I think it was more about the person that's in the White House right now than it was so much a referendum on anything else."

She also spoke on Friday about the similarities between Biden's character and those of her late husband. 

"He was always a voice for reason, especially on the issues of working together and making sure that we do it for the good of the country and not for personal gain," she said.
