Democrats always accuse Republican candidates of racism, President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Bush said on Fox Business's "Varney & Co" Monday in defending controversial comments by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., ahead of the state's runoff election.
"This is nothing new," said Lara Trump, a senior adviser to the president's 2020 campaign. "The Democrats always scream racism at a Republican contender in any field across the country."
Hyde-Smith faces Democrat Mike Espy in a Senate runoff election Tuesday. President Donald Trump is holding rallies in the state for her Monday.
Lara Trump emhasized Hyde-Smith "apologized for these remarks, and I think if you actually watch the way it happened, I think a lot was taken out of context and really blown up out of proportion."
Hyde-Smith has faced backlash after she said she liked one of her political supporters so much she would sit in the "front row" of a "public hanging" with him, according to The Hill.
The comment has especially raised sensitivities, because no state lynched more blacks than Mississippi.
Adding to that image, a photo of Hyde-Smith wearing a Confederate soldier's cap also resurfaced earlier this month.
Since video of her comment surfaced, she has lost the support of Walmart, Pfizer, AT&T, Union Pacific, Boston Scientific, and Major League Baseball, all of whom have asked their contributions be returned.
