Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he won’t meet with Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court.
"I am not going to meet with Judge Barrett. Why would I meet with a nominee of such an illegitimate process and one who is determined to get rid of the Affordable Care Act?" Schumer tweeted on Tuesday.
Schumer joins Democrat Sens. Mazie Hirono, Hawaii, and Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut, who said over the weekend they won’t meet with Coney, The Hill reports. Both serve on the Judiciary Committee.
Barrett began meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday. She is scheduled to meet with GOP senators including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham.
Some Democrat senators say they plan to meet with Trump’s pick. Sen. Cory Booker told “Meet the Press” that he wants to meet with the judge.
"It's my intention to do so … I'm going to make it very clear. One of the things I want to ask her is will she recuse herself in terms of any election issues that come before us, because if she does not recuse herself, I fear that the court will be further delegitimized," Booker said.
The meetings allow senators to question the nominee before a large hearing.
Graham indicated that he will start hearings for Barrett on Oct. 12, with a committee vote expected on Oct. 22.
