Schumer: Trump's 'Temper Tantrum' Over Wall Funding Leading to Shutdown

Sunday, 16 December 2018 10:47 AM EST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday said President Donald Trump's "temper tantrum" over funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is leading to a government shutdown.

"We Democrats, Leader Pelosi and I, offered the president two options as to how to avoid the shutdown,” the Senate Minority Leader said during an appearance on NBC News' "Meet the Press."

“We should not let a temper tantrum, threats, push us in the direction of doing something even our Republicans colleagues know is wrong."

Trump has said he'd be "proud" to have a shutdown over the $5 billion he wants for the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Asked Sunday if there was room for compromise, Schumer told NBC: "He's not going to get the wall in any form."

Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have proposed no more than $1.6 billion. The money would not go for the wall but for fencing upgrades and other border security. Democrats also offered to keep funding at its current level, $1.3 billion.

Schumer says Trump doesn't have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support $5 billion for the wall and said its up to the GOP to get the president to the table.

"They just have to have the guts to tell President Trump he’s off on the deep end here and all he is going to get with his temper tantrum is a shutdown. He will not get a wall,” Schumer said.
