Chris Christie Blasts Judicial Group as 'Cowards' for Ads

By    |   Saturday, 02 August 2014 07:21 PM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has slammed  a conservative judicial group as "cowards" for their TV ads attacking the state's courts as being too liberal.

"I wish they would have run ads when we were trying to get our folks confirmed," Christie said on Friday at a news conference outside a town hall in the eastern part of the state, The Star-Ledger reports. "Maybe they could have helped us.

"I have no respect for folks who are Monday morning quarterbacks — who after all the hitting and fighting are over come into give you the postmortem," he added. "Those are cowards, in my view."

The Judicial Crisis Network released the 30-second spot on Wednesday, charging that the Garden State had "one of the most activist liberal courts in the nation," even under the Republican governor.

The ads played in New Hampshire, where Christie arrived the following day on a speaking tour with an eye toward a White House run in 2016.

"New Jersey’s Supreme Court has been one of the most activist courts in the nation," the spot says. "Because of their lawless rulings, New Jerseys’ property taxes are the highest in the country.

"Chris Christie promised to change New Jersey’s liberal Supreme Court. Over and over, he broke his promise … the court remains liberal."

It was the second spot targeting Christie the judicial group ran in July.

Earlier last month, JCN introduced a digital-only ad effort in Iowa when Christie visited the state as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Iowa hosts the first nation's presidential caucuses.

The group spent $600,000 in New Hampshire for three days of ads, versus $75,000 in Iowa, the New Hampshire Journal reported.

On Friday, Christie blasted the commercials as "blatantly political," the Star-Ledger reports, and defended his record on appointments to the bench.

"We have three conservatives on the Supreme Court in New Jersey that we did not have there before I became governor," Christie said.

"While it's not everything I wanted, it's progress," he added. "But that kind of Washington D.C. mentality is what you expect from these groups: not trying to build anything but trying to tear things down and be critical."
