Democrats have hope for 2018 thanks to a new, bipartisan healthcare study showing that the GOP's repeated attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act have caused insurance premiums to rise due to market uncertainty, according to CNN editor-at-large Chris Cillizza.
The Kaiser Family Foundation released a study this week, showing that insurance providers are preparing to hike premiums in response to uncertainty over whether President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans' can succeed in their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. Premiums could jump as high as 49 percent.
Cillizza imagines a possible attack ad, in which Trump and congressional Republicans are accused of "gutting" healthcare, perhaps with a personalized statistic about the region the ad is running in.
"Healthcare is a tremendously potent issue in a campaign," he adds.
"It touches everyone on a daily, weekly or, at a minimum, monthly basis. It is not some pie-in-the-sky idea. It is a real-life struggle and challenge. It impacts lives. Those are the sorts of issues that really matter in politics — ones that speak to the heart more than the head."
Cillizza concludes, "This Kaiser study is the sort of thing that you will see in lots and lots of Democratic ads over the next 15 months. And it's a line of attack Republicans — at least to this point — have no obvious answer to."
